Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT): Applied Emotional Regulation and Resilience
Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT): Applied Emotional Regulation and Resilience, developed in collaboration with Scott Fox, represents one of the applied resilience-oriented directions within the mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) ecosystem at Zhytomyr Polytechnic State University. The approach focuses on emotional regulation, psychosocial stabilization, and resilience-building through structured, trauma-informed techniques that integrate cognitive, emotional, and somatic practices.
EFT provides individuals with practical tools for recognizing, processing, and regulating emotional states in contexts of prolonged stress, uncertainty, crisis, and traumatic exposure. The methodology supports reducing accumulated psychological distress while strengthening self-regulation capacity, emotional awareness, and internal stabilization.
The approach is designed to help individuals:
- identify and process emotional responses in a safe and structured manner;
- reduce chronic psychological stress and emotional overload;
- restore internal balance and adaptive coping capacity;
- improve emotional regulation and resilience under high-pressure conditions;
- strengthen day-to-day psychological functioning and stress tolerance.
A key advantage of EFT lies in its accessibility, scalability, and adaptability across different professional and social environments. The methodology is non-invasive, flexible, and suitable for both individual and group-based implementation, making it particularly relevant in war-affected, crisis-oriented, and recovery-focused contexts.
Within the Ukrainian context, EFT demonstrates significant potential for supporting:
- war-affected populations;
- internally displaced persons;
- veterans and military families;
- educators and healthcare professionals;
- students and youth exposed to chronic stress;
- communities experiencing prolonged uncertainty and psychological strain.
Importantly, EFT is positioned not as an isolated intervention but as part of a broader resilience-oriented, trauma-informed support ecosystem that integrates psychological stabilization, emotional literacy, psychosocial recovery, and human-centered approaches to well-being.
The methodology contributes to:
- reduced anxiety and emotional distress;
- improved emotional resilience;
- enhanced self-regulation and coping capacity;
- strengthened psychological adaptability;
- and improved overall functioning in everyday life and professional environments.
Within the broader framework of resilience and recovery initiatives at Zhytomyr Polytechnic, EFT supports the development of sustainable, accessible, and scalable psychosocial support models capable of strengthening both individual well-being and community resilience in conditions of crisis, recovery, and societal transformation.
